Dumpster Sizes

Dumpsters are measured by cubic yards, not by feet (this can sometimes confuse people that have never rented a dumpster before). Some people think that they are ordering a 30 FOOT dumpster, when in reality it is much shorter than that.

Our dumpsters come from all over the country so the exact sizes of the dumpsters do vary quite significantly, however here is what is considered the “industry standard” of dumpster sizes:

10 Yard Dumpster

Approximate Size = 4′ tall x 8′ wide x 12′ long

15 Yard Dumpster

Approximate Size = 4′ tall x 8′ wide x 17′ long

20 Yard Dumpster

Approximate Size = 4′ tall x 8′ wide x 22′ long

30 Yard Dumpster

Approximate Size = 6′ tall x 8′ wide x 22′ long

40 Yard Dumpster

Approximate Size = 8′ tall x 8′ wide x 22′ long

Not sure about what you can put in your dumpster? Check out our standard “Disposal Guidelines” here . Remember that every job is different, and we will be sure to advise you of any specific restrictions for your project.

A lot of customers will ask “how much” trash can go into a dumpster and what will it weigh? We will never know how much a dumpster will weigh until we bring it to the landfill and dump it, however we can help you guesstimate what it might weigh.

A great analogy to help you understand this is, are you filling the dumpster full of feathers, or bricks? As you can imagine, the weight difference between these two loads would be extremely large!

We always ask that all debris is loaded into the container and is “water level”, which means nothing is hanging over the sides, or sticking above the dumpster. Every dumpster will be tarped by our drivers to help keep all of the debris inside of the container while it is traveling down the road.

There are also DOT restrictions that our drivers must adhere to for the safety of the driver, as well as others on the road (weight restrictions). That is why we typically put out 10 or 15 yard dumpsters for concrete and asphalt, instead of putting a 30 yard dumpster out there. If you were to fill a 30 yard full of concrete, you would now have a 30-ton lawn ornament!

How Do I Choose the Right Dumpster Size?

Selecting the perfect dumpster depends on the type and volume of waste. If you’re working on a small home project, a 10 yard dumpster may suffice. However, larger projects like home demolition or commercial renovations require at least a 30 yard roll-off dumpster. Our experts can guide you to ensure you get the right sized dumpster for the job, as well as being the most cost effectiveness solution!
